Various niche market periodicals catered to particular audiences.  The United States Catholic Miscellany, the first Catholic periodical published in America (in 1822), catered to Catholics in Charleston, South Carolina, and beyond.  The Youth’s Companion was one of the most famous children’s periodicals; it lived on into the early twentieth century.  In the South, The Southern Agriculturist targeted farmers of that region, and The Lowell Offering was published in Lowell, Massachusetts, for Northern female factory workers.
