The Story:
While developing his printing business following the Revolution, Isaiah Thomas invested heavily in equipment and new printing types ordered from England. Thomas also collected type-founders’ specimen books, donating over twenty to AAS in 1812 as part of his initial gift. One of the most significant is this volume of John Baine & Grandson’s 1787 specimen book, the only copy known to survive.
