The story of General Israel Putnam’s 1779 escape from British forces in Greenwich, Connecticut, was frequently retold in McLoughlin Brothers picture books, with the illustration usually showing Putnam’s daring ride down a steep path or stairs. It is unknown whether this watercolor from the McLoughlin Brothers archives was made on speculation or produced for a specific publication.

Adopted by Georgia Barnhill in honor of George Fox
