McLoughlin Brothers entered into a quiet arrangement with competitor D. Appleton & Company to manufacture picture books with Spanish text for sale in Mexico, Cuba and South America.  Although copyrighted in 1864, the hand-colored illustrations were likely produced a decade or two before, reflecting the profound changes brought by steam powered color lithography.
