The story of John Gilpin and his runaway horse was a perennial favorite with children in England and America. Rather than create original art for this ca. 1880 printing of the tale, McLoughlin Brothers copied exactly the illustrations made in England by Randolph Caldecott, brightening up the colors and then lowering the price of the book in order to undercut the British title being imported into the United States.

Adopted by J. Christopher Collins
