Picturing the Past in Stories: by Liam Riordan (University of Maine at Orono)
Friday, April 28, 2000, at 4:30 p.m.
Précis: This slide presentation examines the diverse inhabitants of three towns on the banks of the Delaware River in the Philadelphia hinterland. Like the broader region from which they are drawn, these sites raise questions about our understanding of early American multiculturalism. Particular examples from each town (African American, Quaker, and German American), will demonstrate that religious, racial, and ethnic categories of understanding took shape in close relationship with one another. Furthermore, print culture, material culture and historical ethnography are especially important for recovering the specific local meanings of intersecting cultural identities. Refreshments will be provided during the discussion of the paper. Afterwards, a supper, with wine, will be served in the dining room of the Goddard-Daniels House at $13.00 per person. The entrée will be chicken français. Please indicate below if you would prefer a vegetarian entrée. If you wish to stay for supper, please send your check in that amount to arrive at AAS no later than Tuesday, April 25. The Society regrets that it is unable to make refunds for dinner after that date.
