Photographic Services:
Digital Scans, Photographs & Transparency Rentals
Overview
- Reproduction quality scans, photographs and transparencies of materials in the collection are offered for scholarly and commercial use; scans will be NO LARGER than 600 dpi. Please be advised that some orders will not be eligible for resolution larger than 300 dpi.
- Orders will be processed and filled in 2-4 weeks.
- All requests must be submitted in writing or via the Reproduction and Usage Request Form to the Rights and Imagining Coordinator.
- Readers may not use their own cameras in the reading room or carrels for publication quality reproductions. Readers who wish to take research-only photographs of eligible collection material may follow the policies on the Digital Photography in the Reading Room page.
- All Licensing fees must be paid in advance.
- Prepayment is required for all orders.
- RUSH orders are available at double the original price.
- Reproduction orders which must be mailed (digial scans burned on a CD/DVD or a photographic print) will incur a $7 postage and handling cost.
- Those who wish to have orders sent FED EX must supply their Federal Express account number at time of order.
- Publisher and print-run must be supplied at time of request. Please refer to our main Rights and Reproductions page for additional information on policies and procedures regarding licensing.
- Photography of bound items incurs a minimum $25 set up fee the plus fee/shot.
- AAS retains the right to deny requests for digital images for any reason.

Orders should include as much information about the requested image as possible, including photocopies of the image if one is available. This helps to expedite your order and ensure that the correct image is photographed for you. Once an order has been placed, a confirmation of the order will be sent to you. Prepayment of invoices is required. For your convenience, the Society accepts payment by Mastercard, Visa, Discover, American Express. You may also pay by check, which should be made payable to the American Antiquarian Society. Please call ahead if you have questions about payment.
Orders are handled in the order in which they are received. Please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery of reproductions. Rush service is available at an additional 100% cost; be advised this service is only available to those who supply credit card details at time of order. All other orders wishing to be processed as soon as possible are strongly encouraged to provide credit card details. Credit card details may be either called into 508-471-2126 or supplied with quote and invoice number to the Reproduction Payments via Secure Cart.
Permission to reproduce material from the collection must be granted through a license agreement and is at the discretion of the American Antiquarian Society. All licensing is granted on a per use basis. Images cannot be altered without special permission from the American Antiquarian Society. Images used on the World Wide Web must be posted at a dpi no greater than 72. The user of supplied photoduplicated materials assumes all responsibilities for using them in conformity with existing copyright laws.
All color transparencies remain the property of the American Antiquarian Society.
