The Gorgeous Governess

“Emma,” from The Souvenir of Friendship. New York: D. Appleton and Company, ca. 1854.

Catalog Record | Enlarged Image | Adopt a Gift Book Home

D. Appleton & Co. produced several high-end annuals in the 1850s which were full of stories and poems designed to appeal to an educated female audience. The plates featured beautiful scenery and fashionably dressed women, including this steel engraving of Emma, a main character in the accompanying story “My Sister’s New Governess,” a tale of mistaken identity, heiresses, and true love.
