This plate is described by the text: “The picture before us tells its own tale. The fair lady, inspired by a sudden and brilliant idea, has seized the pen to record it for the edification of the world. With bare feet, night dress and disheveled hair, she turns a deaf ear to the cry of her helpless infant and the entreaties of her husband. In her haste she has upset the chair; her slippers, flung carelessly aside, lie in the middle of the floor … books lie profusely scattered around, while she herself, by lamplight, is indicting an ode.”
