“The omnibus” from Christmas blossoms. Philadelphia, Published by E.H. Butler & Co., 1851.

Catalog Record | Enlarged Image | Adopt a Gift Book Home

Images of children were one of the most common themes in gift book imagery. This scene depicts three children playing pretend in their living room on an omnibus made of their parents’ trunk. The young driver readies a whip towards the “horse” as the passengers sit behind her, facing the caboose. The young boy wears a newspaper hat and holds an American flag.

Adopted by Uncle Peter Walther in honor of Alastair Feist
