Based on a German painting  by an artist who created a whole series of paintings based on the life of Martin Luther, this image of the family gathered around a candle-lit Christmas tree appeared in a Philadelphia gift book accompanying a poem that showcases the popular myth that Luther was the first to light a tree with candles in order to express the “light of God” to his children.
