Requesting Permission to Quote from Manuscripts
Written permission must be obtained from the curator of manuscripts to
publish quotations from manuscripts in the collections of the American
Antiquarian Society. (NOTE: Permission is not needed to quote from out-of
copyright printed materials in the Society's collections although
acknowledgement of the use of such materials is appreciated. ) Requests
for permission to publish quotations from manuscripts should be sent to:

The request should include complete information about the anticipated
publication, including title, publisher, and expected date of publication.
Requests should also include copies of the quotations for which permission
is requested as well as the corresponding footnotes or endnotes
identifying the quotations and their locations. There is no fee for
quoting from manuscript collections. However, there may be a licensing
fee for publishing complete manuscript works or facsimiles of manuscripts.

Requests for publishing facsimiles should be directed to the
graphic arts department.
The American Antiquarian Society can claim only physical ownership of the
material in question, not any copyrights or other intangible rights
therein. Responsibility for identifying copyright owners and obtaining
their permission must be assumed by users wishing to publish this
material.
Under the provisions of the Copyright Revision Act of 1976, which took
effect January 1, 1978, unpublished manuscripts by authors who died before
1933 became part of the public domain on January 1, 2003. As a general
rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts
for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For further
