NAIP uses this term somewhat more restrictively-- Used for ornamentation found within the outline of the letter, but not for decoration outside a solid letter. Used also for "twig" and "branch and leaf" styles of type.

Owners' verses (Provenance).
Used for manuscript verses in an item that pertain to the ownership of that item (e.g., "Steal not this book ..."); not used for manuscript verses unrelated to ownership.
