Embossed cloth (Binding) -- [year of publ.].
"Embossed cloth," "Grained cloth," and "Pre-ornamented cloth" are produced by the process of embossing before the cloth is affixed to the boards. In establishing three terms we are attempting to distinguish three varieties of patterns created by the embossing process. "Grained cloth" has a very fine and regular pattern intended to create a texture as much as a visual pattern. "Embossed cloth" has a larger, usually more ornate, pattern and the visual effect predominates over the tactile. "Pre-ornamented cloth," which usually includes a background grain, is distinguished by the use of large, single design motifs on the cover and spine, often incorporating strapwork.
