The Presentation of a Gold Snuff Box to the Rev. R.J. Breckenridge,
D.D.
Baltimore, 1846
This lithograph celebrates the advocacy efforts of the Reverend Robert
Jefferson Breckenridge, a lawyer, politician, and minister. He was an
outspoken advocate of emancipation in the pro-slavery state of
Maryland. An overflow, well-dressed crowd witnesses the
presentation. The print was copyrighted by the Reverend Daniel A. Payne,
later a bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and a president
of Wilberforce University. Apart from the important historical context
for this print, it also documents women's millinery apparel. The variety
of decorations on the bonnets worn by the women of the congregation is
quite stunning.
