English and European Authors
During
the past three decades AAS has made serious efforts to
collect American editions of English and European authors of the
later nineteenth century. (One must remember that anything printed
before 1821 in what is now the United States was for many years
earlier energetically gathered in.) For example, AAS has developed
significant collections of Dickens and the other great (and not so
great) nineteenth-century English authors, as well as Jules Verne,
Russian authors, Paul de Kock, and Alexandre Dumas. The Society
has also sought sets of the various nineteenth-century American
publishers' series. The earliest American editions of important
philosophical, scientific, and political works by European authors
also are of great interest and are well represented on the
Society's shelves.

The Society has a large collection of American editions of the writings of
French novelist Jules Verne (1828-1905), the originator of modern science
fiction. Among them are A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
(Boston,
1874) and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (Boston,
1873). Their
attractive bindings are shown above.
