Digital Photography in the Reading Room
AAS now permits readers to use their own digital cameras to create digital
photographs for research purposes only.
The guidelines are as follows:
- All Reading Room handling policies must be followed.
- The purpose of this policy is to alleviate photocopying and
supplement note taking, not to allow readers to create a complete personal
copy.
- You are permitted a 30 minute session which must not exceed 30
images, per day. This includes no more than 30 pages from any single
volume.
- Time for photographs is between 9-11:30 in the morning and 2-4 in
the afternoon.
- There is a designated area for creating images; you may only shoot
in this area.
- No tripods, camera flashes, special lighting or extra equipment
will be permitted.
- The AAS source information card must appear in every shot.
- You must fill out and submit the Request Form and Agreement to the
Readers. Service staff before you can begin. All items to be photographed
must be listed on the reverse side of this form prior to creating
pictures.
- Some items are ineligible to be photographed. This includes items
available digitally, Reserve collections, fragile items, and any material
which does not safely fit on the specified table.
- You may not photograph the full text of the book or pamphlet. This
includes not being allowed to come back for consecutive days and sessions
to photograph the complete item. If you would like the material in its
entirety, you will be asked to go through our Digital department.
- AAS retains the right to deny requests for any reason.
- At this time we are not charging a fee.
- A staff member may ask you to show him or her the images you
created.
- You may not reproduce the images you create in any form; this
includes reproducing on the web.
- AAS offers numerous high-quality reproduction services for
publication; this includes slides, photographs, digital scans and
transparency rentals. If your request is found to be excessive, you may be
referred to these services.
Agreement:
The AAS offers reproduction services as an aid to scholarly research in
accordance with its mission to provide access to materials while
preserving them for the use of future generations. Copies of library and
archival materials are provided to scholars and researchers for use in
specific projects, not for general library acquisitions. The Society
limits copying requests to those permitted under the copyright law. Refer
to Public Law 94-553, section 107 (fair use) and 108 (reproduction by
