Possible Emily Dickinson Photograph
on Loan to AAS

In January of 2011, American Antiquarian Society member Philip F. Gura placed on long-term loan to the Society a cabinet-sized albumen photograph of a young woman, possibly Emily Dickinson. This image has been the subject of much research and debate, all chronicled in the digital journal Common-place http://www.common-place.org/vol-04/no-02/gura/. Mr. Gura, the William S. Newman Distinguished Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a collector of early photography, decided to place the piece on loan to the Society in order to make it available to future scholars and researchers who might want to see the original in order to determine the identity of the sitter.
