Gift book publishers frequently took images from other books and used them in their own publications, often creating new stories to go with them. This image of a rustic cottage in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was first published in 1849. In 1852 and 1860 however, this image appeared in two different gift books with the title of “Alpine scenery,” completely changing the geography of this scene and placing it in the Alps of Europe.
