William Emery Nickerson (1853-1930) was born in Provincetown, Massachusetts and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1876.  Soon afterwards he began working on improvements to the tanning business, patenting bark grinders and a distiller for use in tanneries.  He is best known today for his work with King Camp Gillette, for whom he designed machinery for the manufacture of disposable razor blades possible.

Nickerson apparently began keeping this scrapbook during his undergraduate years. MIT material includes a list of courses taken by Nickerson and his grades.  There is also considerable information on the process of applying for patents, as well as hotel bills, handbills and other material from a trip to Europe in the late 1870s.
