Don’t be Afraid – Draw!

Don’t be Afraid – Draw!

Prospective Drawing and Sketching from Nature. Mr. E. Whitefield. Reading, Massachusetts, c. 1870. Catalog Record | Enlarge Image | Adopt a Book Home

The English artist Edwin Whitefield came to the United States at age 22 and spent most of his life on the road here and in Canada.  He was famous for his bird’s eye views, many of which he published as lithographs.  Whitefield worked as an artist, printer, book illustrator, publisher, author and teacher of drawing.  This blank handbill describes classes he offered while he was on the move.  In the text, he makes an eloquent argument for the importance of drawing and offers several testimonials -- including one extracted from Worcester’s own Massachusetts Spy.

Adopted by George and Sheila Tetler
