American periodicals competed with European imports for the attention of U.S. customers. The Eclectic, published in New York with a national distribution, combined the two, repackaging what the publisher termed “the cream” of British content. This promotional handbill was issued by a Baltimore bookseller who distributed the journal. Given that it was 1861, he wisely included testimonials from both North and South, with Edward Everett of Boston joining a list that includes a South Carolina college president and a judge from Georgia.
