Robin in Living Color

Robin in Living Color

Heaton, William.  The Story of Robin Hood.  London, Paris & New York: Cassell, Petter & Galpin, ca. 1871. Catalog Record | Enlarge Image | Adopt a Book Home

Robin Hood and Little John battle it out in living color in this frontispiece taken from William Heaton’s adaptation of Robin Hood.  The subtle shades of green, yellow, and brown are characteristic of late nineteenth-century British book illustration.  The transatlantic imprint shows the growing influence of British publishers like Cassell, Petter & Galpin in the American children’s book market after the Civil War.
