First published in 1851, this is the moving story of young Robert, who has to make his way alone in the world after his mother dies in a Cholera epidemic.  Such stories were common in the mid nineteenth century, drawing attention to the economic and spatial mobility of antebellum Americans: Robert’s mother was born wealthy, but died poor; his father was a distant figure who had ventured “out West” to make an uncertain living.  This handsome title plate was chromolithographed by Thomas S. Sinclair (1805-1881).
