Awful Poetry

Strong, Peter R. "Awful," and Other Jingles. New York: G.P. Putnam & Sons, 1871. Catalog Record | Enlarge Image | Adopt a Book Home

The titular poem in this book is set while “Dining at Delmonico’s.” The author overhears a group of young things using “awful” in an awfully inexact way and is driven nearly to distraction by it. The extra lithographed title has a vignette illustration of a child firing a rifle at an angel. It also contains "In Memoriam Charles Dickens" written the day of Dickens' death.
