This is only the third recorded copy of the Society of Black Friars’s 1796 annual meeting address. A quasi-Masonic benevolent organization founded a decade earlier, the Society of Black Friars consisted of prominent New Yorkers who engaged in various philanthropic activities. The orator, Levi Wheaton, was a Rhode Island native and Brown University alumnus who practiced medicine in New York City before returning to Brown in 1815 as professor of medicine. This copy was presented by Wheaton’s daughter Catharine to her teacher, a Miss Balch.
