Amateur Newspaper Collection
Our holdings of pre-1901 amateur newspapers have been growing by leaps and bounds thanks to generous donors. This latest gift consists of a good collection of 38 amateur newspapers published in New England, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Minnesota between 1873 and 1900. These were mostly done by children using table-top hobby presses and sold locally or exchanged for other amateur newspapers around the country.
Gift of Sean Donnelly.
--Vincent Golden, Curator of Newspapers and Periodicals
"One day I am visited by a collector of ordination sermons; the next, by
a collector of 4th of July orations; then comes a collector of geography;
another wants religious newspapers; another wants every book printed in
New York before 1700. I accommodate myself to all; for I want every thing
and collect every thing, and I have more zeal than the whole of them: and
in this way I am kept very busy."
