Colorful Cigar Advertisement
A. Hoen & Company. The Belle of Virginia. . Baltimore: A. Hoen & Company, [ca. 1875]
This advertisement for a cigar brand is a
colorful piece of ephemera. It features two very different
views of womanhood: the seductive southern belle and perhaps
Joan of Arc standing on a vanquished foe.
Gift of Vincent Golden, who finds many wonderful pieces of
ephemera, many of which he donates to the Society. I am grateful
for the work he does in finding these treasures for the Graphic
Arts collections.
-Georgia B. Barnhill, Andrew B. Mellon Curator of Graphic Arts
"One day I am visited by a collector of ordination sermons; the next, by
a collector of 4th of July orations; then comes a collector of geography;
another wants religious newspapers; another wants every book printed in
New York before 1700. I accommodate myself to all; for I want every thing
and collect every thing, and I have more zeal than the whole of them: and
in this way I am kept very busy."
