Low Brow Newspaper
Criminal Life of Albany. A Comical, Quizzical, Theatrical, Satirical Miscellaneous and Moral Journal. (Albany, NY). Apr. 29, 1865. Vol. 1, no. 4.
This newspaper is a fantastic addition to our collection of .low brow.
newspapers. In this case the Criminal Life of Albany is an
unrecorded title not mentioned in any databases, bibliographies, or county
histories. Just like the title says, it gives a report on the seamier
side of life in Albany. There are articles about brothel hotels,
cheats, unfaithful people, scoundrels, and other reprobates of the city.
It also appears to be a blackmail newspaper. One article states, "We
have a letter in our possession from a well known married gent of this
city, to a Cyprian goddess, which we intend to publish in a few days.
Oh, Venus! — what sport." Supposedly the gent in question could
stop by and purchase the letter before it was printed. Not surprisingly, no
editor or publisher is listed by name.

"One day I am visited by a collector of ordination sermons; the next, by
a collector of 4th of July orations; then comes a collector of geography;
another wants religious newspapers; another wants every book printed in
New York before 1700. I accommodate myself to all; for I want every thing
and collect every thing, and I have more zeal than the whole of them: and
in this way I am kept very busy."
