Periodical Issues in Wrappers
This is a fine collection of 595 19th-century periodical issues in their original paper wrappers. Despite containing crucial information, wrappers were often discarded when periodical issues were bound up into volumes. Often wrappers are the only source for who edited or published a periodical, alternative titles, lists of agents and of books published, announcements, and other related bits of information.
Purchased from Periodyssey. Duplicate Dollars Newspapers, Harry G. Stoddard Memorial, and General Library Acquisitions II Funds.
In partnership with EBSCO, AAS has made a portion of its periodicals collection available online. The AAS Historical Periodicals Collection: 1691-1820 presents 550 titles dating from 1693 through 1820. The collection represents over two centuries of print culture, ranging from early works imported by the colonists to later titles published on American soil on the eve of the Revolution and during the early republic.
~ Vincent Golden, Curator of Newspapers and Periodicals
"One day I am visited by a collector of ordination sermons; the next, by
a collector of 4th of July orations; then comes a collector of geography;
another wants religious newspapers; another wants every book printed in
New York before 1700. I accommodate myself to all; for I want every thing
and collect every thing, and I have more zeal than the whole of them: and
in this way I am kept very busy."
~Christopher Columbus Baldwin
