About this collection

Col. Moses Waite (1780-1871) of Hubbardston, Mass., was the son of Joseph (1754-1819) and Hepzibah Sherman Waite (1760-1849). In 1804 he married Phoebe Warren (1783-1874) of Hubbardston. Waite manufactured the boards used to make textile cards, and he was a town officer and state representative who served in the Massachusetts militia during the War of 1812. One of his sons, Joseph Harrison Waite (1817-1844), was a merchant and shipper in Fort Smith, Ark. Other family members settled in Ipswich and Worcester, Mass.

This collection contains genealogical material, business papers, and correspondence of Waite family members. The genealogical data includes early material, c.1820, more recent compilations, and notes on the Tucker and Coit families. Papers of early family members include Revolutionary pension claims of Aaron Waite ( -1821) of Ipswich, receipts from the estate of Moses. father Joseph in 1819, a book of verse written by Harriet Bartlett (1830- ) and her school friends in 1842, several eulogies to Jane Gertrude Waite (1884-1938), and various business papers.

The papers of Moses Waite, for the period 1818 to 1871, include business letters, primarily from John H. Haskell ( - ) of Baltimore, Md., and correspondence of various family members concerning news in Hubbardston. The business letters refer to sales of Waite.s card boards to Haskell and others. There is also a copy of Moses. will, 1871. The papers of Joseph Harrison Waite, for the period 1842 to 1844, include bills of lading for merchandise shipped from Boston to Arkansas. The collection also contains photographs of family members of the early 20th century, in addition to miscellaneous sketches and newsclippings.
