About this collection

Samuel Austin (1760-1830), Congregational minister, was graduated from Yale College in 1783 and was a New-Light disciple of Jonathan Edwards. He first preached at the Fair Haven Church in New Haven, Conn., from 1786 to 1790; from 1790 until his dissociation in 1818, Austin served as minister at the First Congregational Church in Worcester, Mass. From 1815 to 1821, he was president of the University of Vermont, following which he assumed the pulpit of the First Congregational Church in Newport, R.I. He retired from the ministry in Newport in 1825. In 1788 Austin married Jerusha Hopkins ( -1841), daughter of New Light and minister of the Newport First Congregational Church, Samuel Hopkins (1721-1803). In 1808-1809, Austin edited the eight-volume Works of President Edwards. This collection contains 83 of Austin's sermons (in Folders #1-4) and a folder (#5) of correspondence and documents which have been item-cataloged. There are also two folders (#6 and #7) of records of ecclesiastical councils on which Austin served. The councils were convened in the Massachusetts towns of Boylston (1814), Brimfield (1811), Hardwick (1805), and Holliston (1802-1808) and in Hollis, New Hampshire (1802-1814).

Contents of folder five are item-cataloged.
