Boxing was a particularly popular sport and many gymnasiums offered boxing lessons.  The advertisement created for John Sheridan’s Rooms in Boston, about 1830, shows the bare-chested proprietor in a fighting stance with boxing gloves, and fencing masks and gauntlets, arranged on the wall behind him.
