Michigan Essay, or, Impartial Observer. Detroit, Michigan, August 31, 1809. [catalog record]
Gift of Isaiah Thomas, 1812.
The History of Printing in America included a history of American serial publications, closing with a census of newspapers currently being published in 1810. Thomas sought help in its compilation by placing a notice in his own paper, The Massachusetts Spy [view 1] [view 2], requesting publishers to send him sample issues of their papers. The newspaper issues sent to Thomas were later donated to AAS. This example is the first and only extant issue of the first Michigan newspaper.
