Playtime for Children

Over the Hills, a Collection of Pictures in Colors by Miss Ida Waugh. New York: McLoughlin Brothers, 1882.

With the overwhelming popularity of English picture books featuring dainty children in antique dress drawn by Kate Greenaway, McLoughlin Brothers hired American artist Ida Waugh to create illustrations in a similar style.  Waugh was well regarded as a professional illustrator and a fine artist in her lifetime, but later fell into the obscurity.  We hope that Waugh’s triumphant “return” to New York for this exhibition will result in her getting the historical recognition that she deserves.
