This finely executed watercolor is preserved as part of the archives of the McLoughlin Brothers firm.  It was copied by an unidentified illustrator from an image done originally by British artist Walter Crane for an edition of Marie Catherine Aulnoy’s Hind in the Wood published by George Routledge and Sons in London in 1875.  Around 1876, McLoughlin Brothers produced Fawn in the Wood, a competitive (and completely pirated) edition of this tale for the American market, which they continually republished through the 1880s.
