Engraver and publisher Thomas W. Strong used his creative talents to produce this alphabet featuring literary heroes and heroines like Goody Two Shoes, Jack (of beanstalk fame) and Old Mother Hubbard.  The slapdash coloring reflects the cheap but cheerful approach to the production of children’s picture books before the Civil War.
