Henry W. Herrick was a prolific illustrator and art instructor, creating images for Harper’s Weekly and Appleton’s, as well as book illustrations for Hurd & Houghton, Louis Prang & Co., and McLoughlin Brothers.  He taught at the New York School of Design for Women and at Yale College. After 1865 he turned to watercolor painting, exhibiting his work at the National Academy of Design. This watercolor is part of the McLoughlin Brothers archive. It started as a book cover on Baby’s First Book, in 1897 but was later reused an inside illustration in Our Four Footed Friends, published in 1900.
