No Burlesque Characters, No Side Arms
Worcester Skating Rink! Worcester, Charles R. Stobbs, ca. 1870.
Winters are long in New England and social events were often set up to break the monotony of the cold, dark weeks of January and February. This handbill advertises a themed skating party to be held on an evening in late February. The event includes a band, a reception for ladies, and a celebration of George Washington’s birthday. In addition, attendees are encouraged to don costumes (no clowns, no burlesque characters) and military dress is encouraged (no side arms).
