Saved from the Fire
Gilbert Gladwyn, On Papa’s Lap. Boston: American Tract Society, ca. 1872.
This movingly timeless image of a fireman rescuing a little girl from a burning building is taken from a collection of short pieces written in the context of a father explaining various pictures to his daughter. The text explains that the girl was fortunate to be saved by the fireman, but if she had died, her soul would still live with God in Heaven, provided she was good on earth.
