The Worth of a Dollar
Pictorial Narratives. New York: American Tract Society, ca. 1851.
This is a collection of tracts which includes the story of a deacon traveling through eastern Vermont near the Connecticut River, where he finds refuge from a thunderstorm in the cottage of an impoverished farm woman hungry for the word of God, but lacking a Bible. The frugal deacon had just enough money to get to his destination, but decided to give her the weighty sum of a dollar to purchase a Bible. He later learns that the woman not only bought the Bible, but led a revival in her community.
