At the height of its success as a mass producer of chromolithographed picture books, McLoughlin Brothers issued Wild Animals as part of its Bird and Animal Series.  This stunning image of elephant-riding hunters stalking a wily Bengal tiger reveals a great deal about imperial colonialism (note that elephant drivers are turbaned East Indians, while the rifle-bearing hunters are white men wearing pith helmets).
