Spring Blossoms Painting Book. New York: McLoughlin Bros., ca. 1900.
Painting books were the forerunner of coloring books, and they were a staple of the McLoughlin Bros.’ publishing business by the late nineteenth century. Here is an image of two children dancing the minuet; the fully chromolithographed picture appears on the bottom, serving as a model for the outline version on the top, which has been painted by an aspiring young artist.
