Starting in the 1830s a number of humor newspapers and periodicals began to spring up around the country. This is the first issue of one of the first humor periodicals printed in Cincinnati. The editor, he writes, “Here is the first number of our Semi-Monthly periodical in all its plumage. ‘Brevity is the soul of wit,’ and we shall be as short as a fresh landed Dutchman’s coat tail.”
