Beecher for Beginning Readers
Catharine Esther Beecher, The Fellenberg Primer: For Children Who are Beginning to Learn to Read.Hartford: Brown and Parsons, 1841.
This primer was written by educator and reformer Catharine Beecher (1800-1878) fairly early in her career. She wrote it “to introduced a complete and systematic course of moral instruction into common schools,” naming the book after Swiss education theorist Emanuel von Fellenberg. When describing a dog, the text moves from physical observation (“look at its mouth”) to moral instruction (“we must not hurt him, for that would be wrong”).
