Gustav Erlenkotter, Poetischer Jugendchatz in Bild und Spruch. New York: Published for the author, ca. 1870-1885.
This magnificent wood engraving of a Christmas tree is taken from a collection of children’s poetry in German. In true nineteenth-century fashion, the tree sits atop a table, and sports burning candles, with toys and fruit strewn at its foot. This image reminds us that the Christmas tree served a child-centered function in the domestic celebration of Christmas.
