Short and Pithy
Josephine Pollard, The History of the United States Told in Words of One Syllable. New York: McLoughlin Bros., ca. 1884.
In the 1880s, Josephine Pollard (1834-1892) wrote several books using words of one syllable. The History of the United States melds history text and reader with several full-page color plates to both instruct and amuse. The front cover is a classic blend of forefather veneration and manifest destiny: it portrays the initial contact of Columbus with a blurry-faced band of Native Americans emerging from the wilderness--a portrait of George Washington hangs above.
