This book is a series of lessons designed to be used with common objects, like glass, whalebone, and beer--starting with simple observations involving color, touch, and smell, and ending with a brief description of how the items are produced. The text is an Americanized edition of an English book published by teachers at a school guided by the educational principles of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827).
