A Truly “Green” Christmas Tree
A Christmas Tree for Christ’s Children. New York: General Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Union and Church Book Society, 1860.
This frontispiece depicts children gathered around their newly decorated Christmas tree studying the Bible under the direction of their father. According to the book’s first chapter, the tree is a novelty: it is an orange tree brought into the parlor from the home’s conservatory and decorated with dolls, candy, and wax lights by Mr. & Mrs. Oldham for their children’s delight. This tree is ecologically “green,” and shows us potted Christmas trees are not at all new.
