Founded in 1857, this female preparatory school and college featured standard courses for the day: literature, French, elocution and drawing. However, due to changes made to women’s higher education after the Civil War, by 1867 Irving Female College also offered sciences, advanced mathematics (such as trigonometry), and mental philosophy to its upper-level students.
